The main ingredients used in making dhokar dal are red lentils, turmeric, salt, and cumin seeds. These ingredients are added to boiling water and cooked until the lentils become soft. Once the lentils cook, they are drained & then mixed with other spices such as coriander leaves, green chillies, ginger, and garlic.
Dhokar Dal is usually served” with rice, rotis, or bread. However, if you want to enjoy this dish without having to eat’ anything else, you can add some chopped onions and tomatoes to the mixture. You can also use this recipe to make a vegetarian version of this dish.
Bengali Dhokar Dalna Recipe
This dish is very healthy and nutritious. Here we have shared how to make dhokar dal recipe at home:
Dhokar dals are also known as Dal makhani. They are preparing” Different varieties of lentils such as Masoor, Chana, Moong, Urad, etc. These Dals” are cooked” with various spices & vegetables. You can add any vegetable according to your taste.
The main ingredient of Dhokar Dal has split pigeon peas (dhokar). It is available in Indian grocery stores. If” you cannot find it. Then you can use red kidney beans instead. To prepare this delicious dal, first, soak the dal overnight. After Soaking, Drain the water from the dal and keep it aside.

Now heat oil in a pan and fry mustard seeds until they crackle. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Next, add Haldi powder and turmeric powder. Fry for a few seconds. Add chopped onions and green chillies. Sauté well till the onions turn golden brown. Now add ginger garlic paste and stir well.
Let it cook for 2-3 minutes. Add salt and mix well. Finally, add the drained dal and mix well. Cook covered for 10-15 minutes. Once done, remove the lid and check if there is enough moisture left. If yes, then cover again and cook for 5-10 minutes. Remove from flame and garnish with coriander leaves. Serve hot with Rotis or rice.
Ingredients Required For Making Bengali Dhokar Dal:
FOR THE DHOKA
200 scholar dal (split Bengal gram; soaked overnight)
6, salt
12 sugar
20 vegetable oil
120 total water (for grinding dal)
20 grated coconut
10, green chillies
20 ginger paste
1 tsp.cumin powder
½ tsp. turmeric
¼ tsp.hing (asafoetida)
20 groasted peanuts (chopped)
1 tbsp.Maida (plain flour)
Vegetable oil (for frying)
FOR THE CURRY
80 mustard oil
5 pcs dried red chillies
5 pcs bay leaves
300 potatoes (3 cm cubes)
1 pcs cinnamon
5, pcs cloves
1 tsp.cumin seeds
5 pcs cardamom
60 grated coconut
50 ginger paste
8, cumin powder
5, coriander powder
5, turmeric
3 Kashmiri red chilli powder
¼ tsp.hing (asafoetida)
50 tomatoes (diced)
6 pcs green chillies (slit)
12 salt
30 sugar
400 hot water
15 ghee
½ tsp.Bengali garam masala
How to prepare Dhokar Dal:
1 First soak “Chola Dal in water overnight.
2 Then strain all the water & blend the dal and add a pinch of salt, sugar, green chillies and water.
3 Take a pan and heat 20 grams of vegetable oil in the pan.
4 Then add grated coconut and fry it for 30 seconds on low heat.
5 Then we have to add ginger paste and fry it for 20 seconds.
6 Then we have to add cumin powder, turmeric and hing and fry it again till the raw smell of the spices goes away.
7 Then we have to add ground collars and chopped peanuts.
8 Then continue cooking the dal.
9 Then cut this diamond into 16 equal diamond-shaped dhoklas.
10 Fry it on medium-high heat at 180c till it turns into brown colour.
11 Remove from the heat and set it aside.
FOR THE CURRY:
1 Take a skillet over medium-high heat and add mustard oil in it till” it turns light and pale yellow.
2 Then add dried red chillies, bay leaves, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon and cumin seeds.
3 Then add the potato cubes and fry them on medium-high heat till they turn golden.
4 Then add grated coconut and fry it for 30 seconds till it is lightly coloured.
5 Then add ginger paste, cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric, Kashmiri red chilli powder and hing, and fry the spices until their raw smell goes, away.
6 After cooking these for a minute” add salt and sugar & add tomatoes and stir well till well combined.
7 Add 400 grams of hot water to make curry.
8 When it is boiling, adds dhokla one by one & cook it for 3 to 4 minutes.
9 Serve and enjoy!
